I thought it was more his soul had transcended to a level beyond human capibilitys, giving him amazing power which he cant control driving him crazy. Didn't really see a disease anywhere.

you have to watch this film, its about a boy who contracts a disease that gives him power, but the power corrupts him and he goes mad and loses control. one of the best manga films ever

One of the best animated feature films ever made for this century.
I hate how people judge this movie just because of it's character designs. Just give it a chance.
