THe point of it was to have Somerset atone for the inaction he was guilty of when his old partner died in the line of duty and to prevent Doe from winning.
It would have worked in another movie, but not in this one.

He's implying that he tried to rape her, but when she resisted, he cut off her head and had it mailed to that spot for 7 p.m.
There are hints throughout the movie as to how it played out:
Tracy said she had a mortal fear of guns, so that's how he forced his way in.
Before Doe surrendered to cops, a receptionist told Mills that his wife has been trying to call him, but they haven't heard anything.
Freeman said for rape prevention, women are told to cry "fire."
Thats how he did it

Without a doubt one of the sickest, most disturbing endings in the history of cinema.
Marvelous stuff, fantastic movie.

I wonder what John Doe meant by "I tried to play husband"?

I was only three years old when this movie came out, but I love it.
It's too bad they don't make movies with this kind of intellect these days.
Oh, the 90s. :[ <3

As amazing as this ending is, it made me laugh after he shot John Doe. Not because of the killing, but because, after he did so, Brad stares into space with his mouth agape. Kinda like "uh... what now?". Then just walks off. Nonetheless, easily one of my top Movies. Right up there with Memento.

Word, he shot him in the head and killed him instantly which was too merciful in my opinion.
