This one was obviously not recorded live. If you notice, Barney's hair switches from messed up to neat, depending on the camera view.

I loved Don Knotts...like you I watched this several times in a row...and I had a great belly laugh each time.You are so right,,,no laugh track!Good shows don't need em!

I don't know about improvising but I remember an interview with Andy Griffith where he said Don would come to show meetings, sit beside him and quietly pitch to him great ideas for the show. One such idea is portrayed in this video. On and off the set Don always made Andy laugh. Don was a great comedic talent.

Is it true that Don Knotts improvised a lot of his lines on the show? I'm not saying this was improvised, but i heard that he improvised most of his lines. If he did, then he was a good actor
